Clothing Optional vacation destinations are nothing new, especially as the naturalist lifestyle is one that is as old as mankind. Every so often throughout history, the trend toward freeing oneself of clothing has been revived so it stands to reason that some resorts have recognized the need for this niche clientele and have decided to cater to it.
While some clothing optional resorts promote a family-friendly atmosphere where nudism is natural and healthy, other destinations push the limits and embrace a swingers atmosphere where anything goes just as long as its consensual.
The concept of a swinger’s vacation has more recently been replaced with a newly coined and more palatable phase called ‘libertine tourism’ but it should be noted that a clothing optional resort and a libertine destination are NOT the same things. While one embraces nudism, the other embraces sexual freedom so they are essentially very different vacations. However, for obvious reasons, the two sometimes overlap.
It’s no surprise that many of these types of vacation destinations exist throughout Europe where people are stereotypically less uptight than in North America. To that end, topless beaches have long been accepted as the norm and sex, in general, is less of a taboo subject. However, the Caribbean is acquiring a growing list of Naturist and Swingers/Libertine Resorts as well. They include:
Couples Tower Isle – Jamaica: Located in Ocho Rios, Jamaica, this resort was formerly known as Couples San Souci. Each of the well-appointed accommodations—complete with plush king-size beds—open onto private balconies and patios furnished with wide cushion seating and an outdoor table. Guests are taken by ferry to Tower Island, which is a ‘NO CLOTHING’ beach. The word ‘optional’ does not exist so it’s definitely clothes off and fully nude.
Couples – Negril: This is the 2nd of four Couples resorts on the island of Jamaica and allows for ‘optional’. Located on 18 acres on the West Coast, this oceanfront oasis has fresh, modern guest rooms, a tree house spa, and a host of guest get-togethers for mixing and mingling. Set on a secluded stretch of soft, sunbleached sand, Couples allows guests to sunbathe nude on a section of the beach.
Couples San Souci: The third Couples resort is a lush, tropical paradise nestled on a hillside to afford spectacular ocean views from each of its 150 suites. Each room has French or sliding doors leading to private, furnished balconies or patios. Luxury rooms feature king beds, ceiling fans, iPod docking stations, and mini-bars. Four restaurants, six bars, four swimming pools, and a natural mineral spring are on the premises along with watersports, tennis, and golf. There is a small, secluded area for nude sunbathing.
Caliente Caribe Resort & Spa – Puerto Plata: This all-inclusive resort in the Dominican Republic is another clothing-optional resort, featuring premium drinks, watersports, and outdoor dining in the clifftop restaurant. Caliente Caribe offers beautiful Caribbean ocean views with its own private clothing optional beach and nightlife at Club Caribe.
Hawksbill Beach Resort – Anguilla: Located directly on the beach amidst 37 acres of tropical gardens, Hawksbill has four secluded beaches to offer its guests, including the one and only clothing optional beach on the entire island. If you’re a beach lover and you can’t wait to get soaking up the Caribbean sun, then you’ll be a big fan of this Antigua hotel. All rooms, restaurants, and bars at Hawksbill by rex resorts are non-smoking.
Hidden Beach Resort – Riviera Maya: Hidden Beach is designed for nudists and those daring to experience the ultimate freedom of nudity while priding itself on maintaining accepted naturist etiquette. The resort is decidedly boutique in nature with only 42 guest rooms but it packs a punch with a variety of room and suite configurations designed with comfort and luxury in mind. Hidden Beach forbids explicit sexual behavior but allows guests to be fully nude for all meals and activities.
Temptation Resort and Spa – Cancun: This over-21 resort embraces semi-nude sunbathing, with female guests given a ‘topless optional’ choice. The adult concept of the resort is furthered by exotic dancers in the nightclub and themed events such as lingerie casino night.
Club Orient – St. Martin: This family-friendly resort boasts a mix of 137 standard rooms and suites and, as the name would suggest, it sits directly on St. Martin’s Orient Beach. Two restaurants, a fitness center, and a variety of watersports are among the resorts amenities, as is a fully nude beach. (At the time of writing this article, Club Orient was temporarily closed due to damage from Hurricane Irma. If you are interested in this resort as a destination, visit their website for updates.)
Hedonism ll – Jamaica: Moving onto resorts that cater to more of a swingers atmosphere, perhaps the oldest and most well-known in the Caribbean is Hedonism II. No doubt, this is the world’s most iconic adult playground where guests turn fantasy into reality. Hedonism II features 280 luxury rooms and suites that feature private terraces with views of the ocean or lush jungle, and contain a flat-screen TVs, Euro-style Jacuzzi shower or a rain shower, coffee maker, refrigerators, hairdryer, and a safety deposit box. The resort encourages guests to be as mild or as wild as they wish with events such as toga parties to enhance the mood. They also cater to nude weddings, and sell day and night passes to non-guests wishing to participate in the resort’s activities.
Grand Lido – Negril: Private and fully butlered as well as strictly over the age of 21, Grand Lido in Negril, Jamaica is an all-suite oceanfront boutique hotel with superb views from every aspect of the property. Welcoming singles as well as couples, this upscale property embraces the naturalist lifestyle and offers clients a liberated holiday as well as access to two all-inclusive resorts Royalton Negril and adults-only Hideaway at Royalton Negril.
Desire Resort – Cancun: This property features a village-style setting with 114 guest rooms and suites overlooking lush gardens or the Caribbean Sea. Accommodations are spacious and recently have been renovated with designs that blend sensuality with comfort. This definitely is NOT a resort that caters to naturist families considering the resort bills itself as an ‘erotic adult destination where couples interested in exploring alternative lifestyles can frolic in a 30-person jacuzzi or a Play Room located just behind the resort’s nightclub bar’. This beachfront resort is all-inclusive and ‘appeals to liberated upscale vacationers with a wild side and couples looking to explore their sexuality’.
