At the mention of the Mojave Desert, most people think of a hot and barren dry land where cactus grows, rattlesnakes lurk, and the only action is the tumbleweed that casually blows across the highway. But the fact is, there’s lots of fun to be found if you just know where to look for it, including plenty in the way of thrill-seeking. ATV and Dune Buggy racing, skydiving, and mountain biking are among those thrilling adventures, as well as zip-lining through Bootleg Canyon via FlightLinez.
That’s right – just head toward Boulder City, Nevada where the desert terrain encompasses Bootleg Canyon, with elevations of over 3000 feet. It’s the perfect setting for a four-tier zipline down the side of a mountain.
Check-in includes a short training session to familiarize riders with equipment and safety procedures, and then it’s time to climb aboard a short bus that will take you part way to your destination, 3532 feet above sea level. A short hike also comes into play when the roadway ends.
You don’t have to be an athlete to do the hike but it certainly doesn’t hurt to be fit, or at least prepared for the steep and rocky walk, considering the elevation and change in temperature, as well as the fact that you need to haul your own trolley and helmet while wearing your harness. Fortunately, if you’re truly incapable of carrying your own equipment, the staff are happy to help out.
Trained guides provide plenty of instruction as well as plenty of laughs as they help you to gear up and strap in for the ride of your life. The first take-off platform sits at an elevation of 3532 feet with a zip line of 1852 feet long involving a steep drop. The second platform sits at 3254 feet elevation and slides riders horizontally across the mountain with a ride of 1864 feet. Platform #3 is located 3129 feet above sea level and provides the longest ride of the four, with a zip line of 2546 feet. And finally, flight line #4 from the platform starts at 2919 feet and carries the rider 1145 feet. Altogether, it’s an unforgettable paraglide over gorgeous terrain that will leave you feeling elated.
No doubt, the guides add to the fun with all of their jokes and puns, all the while looking out for everyone’s safety and well-being. And you might get lucky and see some of the canyon wildlife, including lizards, eagles, jackrabbits, and mountain goats.
This experience makes for an excellent Las Vegas side trip. Weather permitting, the flight lines usually run twice per day – 8:00 am and 1:00 pm; reservations are required. Flights are priced from $159 per person. FlightLinez Bootleg Canyon is located at 1512 Industrial Road, Boulder City, and can be reached by phone at +1 702 293 6885 or by accessing their website HERE.
