With so much to do in the region in no matter the season, it’s always the perfect time to check into Mont Gabriel Resort & Spa in Sainte-Adele. This property is a mere 35-minute drive from Montreal’s Décarie Circle and sits atop a 300-meter mountain plateau. The St-Sauveur Valley offers travelers stunning views, as does the resort itself which is shrouded in a variety of fragrant trees.
Mont Gabriel recently underwent an extensive makeover that included all 135 guest rooms along with the bar and dining room, an indoor pool, and spa. The 80-year-old landmark now carries an updated look but retains its quaint and rustic charm, and continues to draw celebrity clientele.
All accommodations within all three wings have undergone a remake that includes updated rooms and bathrooms, such that all units now feature new TVs, mini-fridges, coffee machines, and upscale linens. The more luxurious Tyrol section of the hotel now includes kitchenettes and balconies (patios on the first floor) that overlook the adjacent valley. And the Marquise wing now offers adjoining rooms for families.
Mont Gabriel is known for its signature log cabin room, which has also received updates. With the exception of the original timber, which has been retained in each room, the remainder has been gutted and overhauled to include new furniture and beds, as well as quaint and cozy, eco-friendly gas fireplaces.
As for the remainder of the lodge, the indoor pool received an update with new tiling and deck chairs, and the St. Mortiz bar underwent a complete renovation such that it now boasts a sports bar theme with a flat-screen TV, high top tables, and a new bar. The country theme that extends throughout the resort carries through to the new dining room as well.
The resort is known for hosting weddings, and it’s the perfect locale considering so much to do on the property. Certainly, the wedding party and guests will find plenty to keep them busy. From six clay tennis courts to racquetball and volleyball, fitness classes, and a spa, to an on-site 18-hole championship golf course with a Pro Shop, Mont Gabriel has something for everyone.
And of course, there is skiing. Ski Mont-Gabriel is only 25 meters from the hotel’s front door. Though small compared to other ski hills in the area, it touts some of the most challenging moguls in Quebec.
Rates fluctuate with season and demand, but overall accommodations are moderately priced unless you’re considering a two or and three-bedroom condo. Plus, there are 2 chalets are available on the property.
PROS: Affordably priced standard rooms. However, condos are pricey. Renovations have certainly improved the look and feel of the guest rooms. Accommodations are clean. Plenty to do on the grounds. Pools are small but well kept. Golf is free if staying longer than 2 days. Wi-fi is included in room rates.
CONS: The biggest complaint is slow service. The extensive reno to the bar seems to have passed the cost down to the drinks which are quite high. Unless you are a fan of upscale cuisine with an upscale price, you might be well advised to eat dinner elsewhere.
