Sea Watch on the Ocean – Fort Lauderdale

Looking for a dining experience that has it ALL, including spectacular views, a varied menu with reasonable prices, the option for lunch or dinner, and a casual atmosphere amidst elegant decor?  If so, that’s undoubtedly what you’ll get if you visit Sea Watch on the Ocean in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Located between Lauderdale and Pompano Beach and sitting on prime shoreline property, the Sea Watch offers spectacular views of the Atlantic Ocean and the accompanying beachfront, delighting diners with surroundings of tall swaying sea oats and dozens of majestic palm trees blowing gently in the breeze.  The restaurant dates back to 1974 and continues to boast an aura of Old Florida.

Having visited in the late 80s and again recently, we can attest to the fact that decor has changed over the years, but the quality of food and service remain as high as ever, as does the popularity of the restaurant. Complimentary valet parking is in place, which is a nice convenience considering how very busy Sea Watch can become, especially on the weekends when a tasty Sunday brunch comes into play.

Both the lunch and dinner menus lean heavily toward seafood, with various presentations of crab, shrimp, and lobster, though the dinner menu furthers the options with scallops, mahi mahi, swordfish, and bouillabaisse.  However, the landlubber is not left out as there are also soups and salads, pasta dishes, top sirloin, and mouthwatering prime rib, the latter of which was tender and done to perfection.
Although casual attire is encouraged, we feel as though shorts and T’s are more appropriate for lunchtime, whereas dinner has more of an elegant and romantic feel thanks to the nighttime lighting.  This is when something a little more dressy or upscale casual seems not only suitable but warranted.  You can have a few drinks in the upstairs bar and lounge while you’re waiting for a table.
Price wise, you can expect Sea Watch starters to run between $10 and $20, with the exception of the Chilled Seafood Tower, which is $39.  Soups and salads run between $6 and $8, pasta dishes are $15, while main courses start at $22 and reach of a ceiling of $37 for the Surf & Turf.  However, side dishes are priced separately, starting at $3 for French Fries and ending at $7 for a Loaded Baked Potato.  Other sides include Macaroni & Cheese, Caramelized Mushrooms, and Corn Bread.  (Prices are in US dollars).
For dessert, do yourself a favor and try the Key Lime Pie.   For those who lean more toward sweet than savory, you can’t go wrong with the Pecan Diamond.
As far as we’re concerned, Sea Watch on the Ocean is an excellent place to dine when visiting Fort Lauderdale.  The view is beautiful, the restaurant is memorable, and the meals are delicious yet moderately priced.  What more could you ask for?
