Split Rock Resort – Lake Harmony – Pocono, Pennsylvania

Looking for a holiday destination that has it all?  Then look no further than Split Rock Resort on Lake Harmony, set amidst the unmatched beauty and tranquillity of Pennsylvania’s Pocono Mountains.  This all-seasons hot spot serves up family fun all year ‘round.  It affords skiers the perfect locale in the winter months, with Jack Frost Big Boulder Ski Area only 4 miles away and provides for swimmers, boaters and a myriad of outdoor activities in the summer months.

Located only 6.1 miles from I-80, it’s also the perfect destination if you have a need for speed and plan on venturing to Pocono Raceway only 7 short miles and 15 minutes away.  With such an impressive track and facilities, surely you DON’T want to miss it!

Split Rock comes with a tagline of ‘Resort, Ownership, Waterpark, Golf’ but this is only a small part of what you will find there.  A variety of accommodations exists within an assortment of hotel suites, lakeside lodge rooms, villas and duplex cottages, all of which offer spaciousness, cleanliness, and a multitude of features, including fully equipped kitchens, multiple bathrooms, several TVs, and lots of sitting room.

Our experience came in the form of a Galleria Two Bedroom Suite located within the main building. We were justly impressed with the size, cleanliness, and overall convenient layout.  On the whole, the suite was quiet – no noise from the parking lot outside nor from the neighbors – above or below.  The only exception was the hallway, which can get a bit raucous with anxious kids on their way to the waterpark.  But that is to be expected at a family resort, and the noise ends at a reasonable hour as families return to their rooms for the night.  After that, it’s dead quiet and perfectly suited for a good night’s sleep.

The sheets were crisp and clean, towels were thick and plentiful, and both bathroom showers provided lots of pressure and hot water.  Water pressure and temperature are often a trouble spot at very large resorts, but not at Split Rock.  The kitchen was clean, modern and well-equipped. Wi-fi was available in the room, as were 3 televisions (one in each bedroom and one in the living room) – the perfect set-up for family members all wanting to watch something different.

That said, there are a few notable drawbacks in this room configuration.  For starters, there is a design flaw in the master bedroom given that the window faces the common hallway.  Unless you’re comfortable with passing staff or guests looking into your room where you might be sleeping or changing, draperies need to remain shut and that keeps the room in darkness.  Secondly, there are two entrance doors to the suite – one in the kitchen and living area and another in the master bedroom.  If you keep the bedroom door locked and use the ‘Do Not Disturb’ sign, housekeeping has a tendency to use the other door which can cause unexpected surprises… as happened to us.

Furnishings and decor offer a sense of country charm but decidedly could do with an update.  For example, sofa beds in the living area leave a lot to be desired – not only are the mattresses worn, the sofa cushions are as well.  Window frames (for windows facing the parking lot) are in need of replacing as they are giving into wood rot.

As for resort amenities, there is a seemingly endless list that is conveniently posted in the lobby beside the check-in desk.  A sampling of the biggest and best begins with an impressive indoor water park, an indoor pool and whirlpool, outdoor pool, and ping pong tables.  There’s also a movie theater featuring first run movies, an arcade, and fitness center, as well as a lobby so lively on a Saturday night that it’s hard not to get involved in the party-like atmosphere.

Need more?  Okay then, how about sports facilities that include a 27-hole golf course, a miniature golf course, tennis courts, laser tag, and an 8-lane glow-in-the-dark bowling alley.  There’s also volleyball, basketball, badminton, and racquetball.  Watersports such as kayaks, canoes, water volleyball, and boat cruises can be found near Lake Harmony.  Uniquely, the resort even offers ATV rentals for exploring nearby trails. And if all of that isn’t enough, Split Rock coordinates scavenger hunts, bingo games, and turtle races that are sure to keep the whole family occupied and having fun.  Check the lobby for new itineraries as they are posted so you don’t miss out on a good time.

Exhausted yet?  Then how about a relaxing massage found right at the resort.  There is even an on-site salon if you need to pretty up after experiencing everything else the resort has to offer.

For dining purposes, Split Rock has several options on the 1200-acre property including the Split Rock Grill, an Italian restaurant, the Lakeview Tavern for melt-in-your-mouth steaks and other American favorites, and a sports bar called the Thirsty Moose.  Conveniently, there is a food court located in the main building, right next to the indoor pool and gift shop.  If you’re looking for fast finger foods, this is the place to go for hot and cheesy pizza, hot dogs, fries, salads, and sandwiches.  They even have a few bar and grill type foods like mozzarella sticks with marinara dip and they’re delicious – we promise!

However, if you prefer to put something together in the privacy of your own kitchen, the gift shop also houses a small food section where you can grab a few microwaveable items, canned goods, and staples such as eggs and bacon, bread, and peanut butter and jelly if you want to whip up a few PB&J’s for the kids before you all venture off for a day of fun.

For our personal experience, we spent 3 full days at the resort and still didn’t see it all.  Why?  Because Split Rock has SO VERY MUCH to offer that it’s almost impossible to do it all in just one stay.  But we urge you to try.  Consider it a challenge!  We can attest to the fact that this resort truly has thought of everything that guests might need or want during their stay. The unexpectedly huge grounds are beautiful, the lobby is modern and welcoming, and the staff is friendly and helpful.  What more could you ask for besides reservations?

Well, your wish is granted. Just click right HERE and we’ll take you straight to the reservations page.  Enjoy your stay!

PROS:  Location.  Access to Lake Harmony.  A variety of accommodations styles and configurations. Moderately priced.  Plenty of on-site amenities.  A variety of activities.  Impressive indoor pool area and waterpark.  Friendly staff.

CONS:  In need of some updates and repairs.  Saturday night karaoke in the lobby is far too loud and tends to overwhelm conversation at the check-in desk and while making purchases at the gift shop or cafe.

I appreciate this posting, I was wondering what the resort was like and if it was suitable for all ages or whether it catered just to kids and the waterpark.
