An example of this are the restaurant’s shrimp tacos, which are lightly dusted with a grasshopper crust. Grasshoppers also show up in the $15 Tlayuda, along with crispy Corn Tortillas, Black Bean Quesillo and Chile de Agua. And then there are dishes featuring Black Ant Salt, essentially grated ants sourced from the city of Oaxaca, Mexico where they’re not just special, apparently they’re also expensive. The Black Ant Salt is also used for rimming cocktail glasses.
If you can get past the idea of creepy crawlies in your food and open your mind to the experience, you just might find that your taste buds are delighted.
The menu’s creativity and uniqueness continues with enchiladas made with rabbit; tacos made with braised goat and avocado yogurt; Duck Dumplings with Cortija Cheese and a Kumquat Salad; and Roasted Suckling Pig paired with Habanero mole, yucca puree, and pickled onions. And don’t forget to try a $7 side dish of Cactus Fries or Garlic Grilled String Beans.
Guests will be every bit as amazed by the dessert and cocktail selection, which are just as creative and adventurous.
For a flavor sensation, try a cocktail called La Bestia which mixes Añejo Tequila with hot sauce and cucumbers. But if you have one too many, you just might find that the restaurant’s Ant Logo starts looking more like a neon alien.
With entrees priced between $22-$30, couples can expect to throw down approximately $75 (US) for dinner. Reservations are accepted, but even during peak time the wait isn’t usually more than 15 minutes. Outdoor seating is also available.
For convenience, The Black Ant also features Takeout and Brunch on the weekends.
