Wynwood is one of Miami’s hippest areas. Essentially, it’s an outdated business district that now functions as an outdoor museum boasting sizeable works of art created by some of the most prestigious street artists. The district’s warehouses have been repurposed as art galleries and chic bistros, bars, and lounges that draw large crowds of young, hip patrons.
Among those restaurants and lounges is Three by Chef Norman Van Aken, who has fused the energetic and artsy dynamic of the neighborhood with a typically Floridian flair. Bright turquoise blue and lime green add eye-popping accents to the tropical decor and mesh nicely with the energy and color of the street art backdrop.
Guests have the option of being seated at tables, booths, at the counter, or at the bar, which has a retro 60’s feel to it given the wallpaper pattern and hanging bric-a-brac decor.
The menu is Florida-themed with plenty of locally sourced ingredients that come together to create New World Cuisine. Dishes such as Wahoo Tiradito, Brazilian Shellfish Blintz, Grouper in Charred Banana Leaf, Spice Rubbed Shrimp Confit, and Cracked Conch Chowder made with saffron coconut milk and citrus help to further the motif of South Florida and the tropics.
The entirely ‘prix fixe’ menu offers three and four-course meals set at $60 and $75 US per person respectively, with a dessert and/or cheese option at an additional charge. There is also a special ‘Chef’s Tasting’ of seven courses at $125 US, with everyone at the table expected to partake. Bread is included free with the meal but charges apply for additional orders. Our favorite three-course combination includes the Thai Garden Salad, Shrimp Confit, and Wood-Grilled Beef Striploin.
Upstairs, the restaurant offers No. 3 Social, a fun and colorful rooftop bar and lounge that overlooks the street art installments below. The tropical decor continues to flow here as well, with electric blue seats, bright and bold pillows as accents on soft gray couches, and an added slathering of wicker ceiling lamps, funky cocktail tables, and pinky-purple velvet couches.
The traditional bar features sea green tile and several wicker stools and serves up a host of creative cocktails inspired by the tropics. As an example of this, our very favorite is Advice from a Flamingo, made from green tea infused vodka, honey, lemon, lime, and effervescent grapefruit juice. Coming in at a close second is the Pina del Sur, made with housemade creme de coco, pineapple, safe, lime, pisco and allspice. The average price of cocktails is $14US. A little steep perhaps, but they are unique, so chic, refreshing and delicious!
For patrons wishing to eat at No. 3 Social instead of in the restaurant below, the limited menu offers oysters on the half shell, conch fritters, pulled pork sticky bao, and tropical fruit paletas, all priced between $4 – $18US.
Three at Wynwood Arcade consistently scores high with patrons, for its location and decor and most importantly for the creatively flavorful dishes. And the rooftop bar and lounge is the icing on the cake.
