Toups’ Meatery – New Orleans, Louisiana

If you know anything about the city of New Orleans, Louisiana, you know it is full of history. So, if you find yourself in the area, it only makes sense to dine at an establishment owned by one of the oldest families lines in the state.  While Toups’ Meatery only opened in 2012, the family tree goes back over 300 years, giving Chef Issac Toups plenty of recipes and inspiration to create mouth-watering dishes based on traditions, the land, and the culture of this unique city.

Though the restaurant interior lacks special decor and is rather plain, your focus should not be on the walls. It should be on the delicious food in front of you. Combining classic Louisianna cuisine and Cajun spices with the artisan feel of today’s culinary world, the meals are unique and truly remarkable. However, with ‘meatery’ in the name, it should go without saying that this is not a place for vegetarians or vegans.

The menu may seem pricey to those on a budget, but we can assure you that every penny is well spent. Depending on your appetite, the portions are large enough to feed two people. If in a group, we suggest starting off with the Meatery Board ($25), which is comprised of house-made fresh and cured meats and accompaniments. It is the perfect way to start off your meal. For a refreshment, we cannot recommend the Pedal Boat ($10) enough, made with Gin, Malibu Rum, grapefruit, and smoked honey.

As for the main course, you can’t go wrong with the Double Cut Pork Chop with dirty rice ($32). Cooked to your liking, this large chop is quite flavorful and incredibly tender. On the other hand, if you are looking for something smaller and more traditional for the area, order the Louisiana Crab Claws ($14) with Thai chilis, tomatoes, and pickled pineapple for the perfect amount of zest. For dessert, be adventurous and try the Doberge ($7), which is a salted caramel and peanut butter cake with bacon. Sounds odd, but it’s good – trust us.

The unique dining experience and the combination of flavors found at Toups’ Meatery cannot be found anywhere else in the city. And the quaint outdoor patio is the perfect place to experience it all. It’s no wonder our writers think a meal at Toups’ is every bit of a ‘must do’ as a seeing a jazz band or grabbing beads at Mardi Gras.
