Review of Disney’s Old Key West Resort – with video

by GO GlobeHopper

Disney’s Old Key West Resort was created with the ambiance of the Florida Keys, complete with a tropical setting and a pastel backdrop.  The scenic property is pleasant and peaceful – the complete opposite of the atmosphere in the Disney parks so this is a good choice for guests seeking lodging that is quiet and laidback.

Deluxe Studio

A selection of accommodation types is offered, ranging from Deluxe Studios to one, two, and three-bedroom villas, all of which are clean and spacious (though outdated) with beautiful views that include a choice of water, woodlands, or fairways.  Studios come with 2 queen beds and a room layout that essentially is a standard hotel room.  One Bedroom Villas feature a king bed and a queen-sized sleeper sofa in the living area.  For larger groups of 9 to 12 guests, a Two-Bedroom Villa provides 1 king bed in the 1st bedroom, 2 Queen Beds in the 2nd bedroom, and a queen-sized sleeper sofa in the living area.  The Three-Bedroom Grand Villa expands on the two-bedroom layout by adding a 3rd bedroom with 2 double beds. The Villas also contain a twin-sized sleeper chair in the living area.  All rooms offer air conditioning, a flat-screen TV and DVD player, an iPod dock, an alarm clock, a ceiling fan, a coffee maker, a hairdryer, bath products, an iron and ironing board, an in-room safe, and free wi-fi.  Additional features included in the villas are a convenient washer and dryer combo, plus a fully-equipped kitchen and dining area.  For guests wishing to use their kitchen, groceries are available at the on-site convenience store.

Marina

On-site amenities include a highly-rated cafe called Olivia’s for breakfast, lunch, and dinner; 2 snack facilities; and 2 bars and lounges. Additional conveniences include an ATM, gift shop, and concierge services, plus a fitness center, steam room, and spa.

There are 4 outdoor pools on the property including a children’s pool and waterpark.  Guests will also find two family arcades, child care services, daily activities, and movies under the stars.  Pay-as-you-go services include rental Surrey Bikes and regular bicycles, plus motorized and non-motorized watersports, most of which can be found at the marina.

PROS:

Free shuttles to any of the Disney properties and free water taxis to Downtown Disney
Guests receive extended park hours
Themed property is beautiful and well kept

CONS:

One of the biggest complaints about this resort is the distance from the parks and the wait times for shuttles
Room/Villa furnishings are worn and outdated
Pools are small
The property is very spread out so a lot of time is spent walking to and from amenities
Room service is limited to pizza
Water conservation causes a lack of water pressure in the shower
